My experiences in portable computing
Well, I had a good holiday in Guangzhou and now that I am back I intend to get this blog back to regular schedule. Just a few points before the regular postings
I had plan to write even though I was on holiday as I have access to the internet at my in-laws. Two things prevented this.
- My slow USB flash drive - Bought a new Sandisk flash USB before my trip. Load in Portable Apps with my current profile for Firefox and Filezilla. Works great; nice to see a familiar interface with all your regular tabs loaded up at a foreign desktop. But it is TOO slow to work and blog on it. It takes up more than 3 seconds to load up a page. Once I tried to blog for the first time, I knew it will be too tedious to do any work on it.
I learn a lot from Gizmo from Techsupportalert.com in the ways of portable computing. Read it here and here. - The censorship of sites in China - The censorship is better now than 2 years ago when I won’t even load up yahoo.com. But still, finding interesting sites on Google Reader and Alert but can’t click through to view the site is frustrating. And it is not only the heavy flash site that is the culprit. I am able to read ESPN.com but not Bodis.com (my domain parking site).
That said, I think bringing your essential apps on your USB (especially Firefox with personal profile load up) is really nice. I think the future of portable computing from your USB is promising. As flash drive gets faster and PortableApps.com matures, you will have your whole desktop experiences in you flash drive. (Now let’s wish there is a portable version of Windows Live Writer, I really miss it!)
Oh, one last thing. I had a article for Preezo published at gHacks.net. Martin was very kind to select it to publish it on his site. Hope this will result in more traffic to BlogMunch.
