Blog migration series - choosing my Wordpress theme

August 19th, 2007 Posted in Wordpress themes

Migration of your blog is not an easy task. That’s why there are many bloggers who reflect on their first year blogging said that shifting to your own domain is of the first priority. I am starting a series of posts on my migration from Blogger to WordPress.org, so that I can share my knowledge to anyone wanting to migrate their blog .

Blog Migration Series:

  1. Choosing my Wordpress theme
  2. Choosing a webhost

There are tons and tons of Wordpress theme online that I didn’t even know where to start looking. Googling brought me to the first theme that I install.

The Copyblogger Theme is a clean and SEO optimized theme designed by Chris Person from Pearsonified.com for Copyblogger. After a redesign of Copyblogger, Chris decide to release it as a free theme. I try it for a few days and even downloaded a 3-col mod of the theme. But eventually, I gave up. I do not know enough CSS to modify it to my liking.

Next, I went to smashingmagazine.com to look at its list of Wordpress theme:

83 Beautiful Wordpress Themes You (Probably) Haven’t Seen

21 Fresh, Usable and Elegant Wordpress Themes

10 Fresh, Elegant and Clean Wordpress Themes

One thing I must say about Smashing Magazine is that this site is overflowing with information. Some of its post is so long, that you will take some time to finish reading. From there, I found three theme that I like.

Gridlock 1.4

A magazine style theme that I like very much, but it is very rigid in terms of customizing. If you want to use it as it is, this is a great Wordpress theme.

ProSense

This is a Wordpress theme design by Dosh Dosh and The Wrong Advices. In it own words,

A clean looking theme that reeks of professionalism and style, ProSense is created with optimal monetization, web usability and search engines in mind.

A 3-column theme with ad-blocks optimally placed. But the design is a bit too simple for me, but still I install it.

Redoable 1.2

This is the theme that you are looking now. It reeks of designers touch all over the place. The creator Dean Robinson uses

K2 as a base to create such a beautiful theme that I have to install it. Little touches like the Archive page using Extended Live Archives and also the ultimate categories cloud makes the sidebar much more usable. The best feature of this theme is the live search (although this module is from K2) which allows you to search my archive by just typing into the search form. I would have like to add another sidebar to this theme and currently I am searching for ways to do it. If you know how to do it, please send me a email or tell me at the comments below. Much appreciated.

Being the tinkerer that I am, I am just finding out how customizable Wordpress is. Hope I can still find time to blog.
