WinDirStat 1.1.2 (Unicode)

WinDirStat is a freeware I use frequently to view the contents of my hard disk and clear off unwanted stuff. It is not a one-click solution like Easycleaner; you need to know the files that you are deleting.

Easy operation: You can choose to scan all your local drive, an individual drive or a folder to view the files within. Once the scan is completed, you will see a colorful and orderly treemap at the bottom of the window. You can mouseover the various squares to see path of the file at the bottom status bar. The size of the squares is proportional to the file size. The other windows are the directory list and the extension list. Clicking on a drive/folder/file will highlight its square on the treemap. Similarly, clicking on the extension list will highlight all same extension. You can find stray mp3s scatter on your hard dive.

Intuitive visual: It is so natural in eye-balling the treemap to look for the information you need. I will go through the various “large” squares and delete the ones I do not need. The whole treemap will refresh itself after you delete a file and you can go on to the next “large” square.

One at a time: For a cleanup tool, it is unforgivable to be able to only delete one item at a time. you cannot even use the normal win shortcut, like “Shift” click-select to select a list of files to delete. On its website, the author of the program list it as a feature on a future release, but the program has not been update since July 2005 (There are language update, that’s all).

To me, the latest version (1.1.2) is enough and I would highly recommend it to anyone who needs a tool to free up spaces on their hard drive.
