Talk to your readers like the Sports Guy

August 3rd, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in the sports guy

the sports guyOf all the advices I receive from the blogosphere regarding blogging, the advice to write as if you are talking to your readers is the most beneficial to me. When I read back my previous posts, I can feel the flat, instructional based post that even I feel bored reading them. But I am not deleting them as they are part of my learning experience to blogging.

One of the better writers I find on the web is the sports guy (Bill Simmons)from ESPN. Sometimes, I wonder how he even got paid for writing what he writes. All his articles are based on his opinions, experiences, thoughts towards his favourite topics. He will always write around his Boston sports teams (Celtics, Patriots), movies, TV series and books. All of them are extremely entertaining. His articles are the only ones that I have to contain myself to prevent laughing out loud at my workplace. His writings are well thought out and even his one sided arguments are persuasive. His archive now is open, anyone can look back at all his articles now (previously, it was locked within ESPN Insider). Some of his regular features includes:

NBA Draft (yearly)
Reviews to Movies and TV shows
Sports Guy Chat
Mailbag (most entertaining feature)
Podcast: The BS Report

You can get started on reading his articles by going through the Sports Guy Glossary. Or you can search through his archive by categories.

Bill’s style will be the one that I aim for with regards to conversational writings and I hope one day I will be able to entertain my readers like him. His book is out now and I am hoping my library will carry them soon.

So who is your favorite writer on the web? Send a link to me and entertain me.
