Stages of adjustment to Telemarketers
I receives about 1-2 telemarketing calls a week. Those are mainly from banks that wants you to apply for their credit cards or other cash credit facility. Here are the stages of adjustment for telemarketing I went through.
Stage 1 - Listening to find the real deal.
Telemarketers only tag on to me when I start working and earning a decent amount. I would patiently listen to them as they explain the details of their plan. Sometimes if the deal is good, I wold even proactively ask some relevant questions. But as the number of calls increased and I have got all the cards I want, I will be bored and mildly irritated by these calls. I am only pissed off when I they resort to hard selling tactics. This leads to stage 2 of my adjustment.
Stage 2 - The hard “NO”
At this stage, as the demands of my work increased. I just don’t have time to entertain these people. They would call and I would just say no from the start. Some will understand and hang up, but most will just carry on reading their “script” on their table. I have rarely hang up on anyone as I think its rude. but sometime they have to accept “no” for an answer. I can get so work up that I would even resort to not answering phone from phone numbers I do not know.
Stage 3 - The final adjustment
Well, this is where I am now. I know that they have to read out their script or sales-talk before they can earn their pay. So now if I have the time, I will let them talk out before I say my customary “no”. This is my soft “no” method. Surprising, this woks quite well. Well, everyone had to earn their living.
Secret stage - Prank them
Those who played video games regularly will know there are always secrets stages or characters. There are very creative people out there who will think of all sorts of things to irritate these poor telemarketers. The classic one (from Seinfeld) is the one where you ask the telemarketers to give you his/her home phone number and you will call them back when you are free. Another over the top prank on youtube where the person posed as a crime investigator to scare the telemarketer. Hilarious.
These are my reactions to telemarketers. What are yours?
