I sing nursery rhymes to my kids (my beautiful twins) frequently and normally when i got stuck in the lyrics, i will la, la, la the rest of the rhyme. Until one day, I decided to look for the lyrics to these nursery rhyme on the net. Well, some of these lyrics are quite morbid, I must say…
(click on the title of the nursery rhyme to read about its history)

Rock-a-bye baby
Rock-a-bye baby, in the tree top
When the wind blows, the cradle will rock
When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall
And down will come baby, cradle and all

Rock-a-bye baby comes out the most morbid as you are supposed to sing it to your child to lull him/her to sleep. I think I will go back to la, la, la the song. Ha…

Jack and Jill
Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water
Jack fell down and broke his crown
And Jill came tumbling after.
Up got Jack, and home did trot
As fast as he could caper
He went to bed and bound his head
With vinegar and brown paper.

Now, do you want to know what happen to Jill? Read the history to know what came tumbling after.

Humpty Dumpty
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the King’s horses, And all the King’s men
Couldn’t put Humpty together again!

This is slightly better, as Humpty is a fictional character. In a lot of books, Humpty was portrayed as an Egg whose egg shells “All the King’s horses, And all the King’s men” cannot pieced back.

Some others include London Bridge is falling down and Ding Dong Bell.
Now if you want to read really morbid books relating to “Poems and Rhymes Around the World“, I would recommend Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk.
