My review of Online Image Editors
Don’t want to spend $500 for Photoshop? Only use your desktop editors to crop and resize photos? Or don’t even have disk space for a photo editor? Well, now you could do quite a lot with an online image editor. Most of them will serve your basic needs like cropping, resizing, contrast, brightness, red eye correction and much much more. What is lacking is layer management so if you need that, you have to go back to Photoshop.
Picnik - This is arguably the king of online image editor at the moment. The interface is the nicest among all online image editors. The main thing is it is relatively lag free. You can even go full screen and you won’t even know it is hiding within your browser. The best thing I like about it is that every tab tells you what it is for and show you how to use it.
Absolutely the best image app now.
FotoFlexer - A relatively newcomer to the scene. The interface is oddly similar to Picnik with a Mac touch. Fotoflexer have a wide range of effects to choose from (Sketch, Cartoon, Pop Art, etc.). What stands out is the ability to add layers. It is limited in function but good to have if you want to put something simple like a speech bubble. All your images can be drag&drop and resize directly by pulling like a desktop editor.
A promising contender.
Pixer.us - A simple image editor. Pixer.us only provides the very basic features to manipulate your images. All its edits are non-destructive like Picasa, so you will be able to revert back to the original photo any time.
One of the first online image editors I used.
Phixr - Another basic image editor. What I like is the ability to preview the changes before you apply it. Also if you are into the Web 2.0 logo thingy, Phixr can make rounded corners easily on your image. Compared to the others, this app is slow. Waiting for it to execute takes at least 5 seconds.
Need to improve on its speed to contend.
Quick Thumbnail - Not a full fledge image editor, but a specialized tool to resize image. Had lots of standard size to resize to, so you don’t need to guess. Like, do you know the dimensions for an avatar is 100×75?
My first choice for resizing online.
