Blog migration series – Choosing a webhost
Migration of your blog is not an easy task. That’s why there are many bloggers who reflect on their first year blogging said that shifting to your own domain is of the first priority. I am starting a series of posts on my migration from Blogger to WordPress.org, so that I can share my knowledge to anyone wanting to migrate their blog .
Blog Migration Series:
- Choosing my Wordpress theme
- Choosing a webhost
Well, this whole blog shifting task proved to be more difficult than I thought. First, I have select a hosting service to host my new blog. After visiting a few forums (webhostingtalk.com and namepros.com) to read reviews about web hosting service, I finally narrowed down to these four webhost.
Price consideration
This to me is the most important consideration. I want to set up my blog as cheaply as possible. For the above four webhost, here are some comparison of their price.
| Dreamhost.com | Anhosting.com |
| One Free domainOne year prepaid – $9.95Two years prepaid – $7.95Discount up to $97.00 from user referral code | One free domainOne year prepaid – $6.95 per monthCoupon Code : AN-SUMMEROFLIGHTS-0202 – two months free (worth $13.90) |
| Bluehost.com | Hostgator.com |
| One Free domainOne year prepaid – $7.95Two years prepaid – $6.95 | No free domainOne year prepaid – $6.95 per month plan (Hatchling)Coupon code : iceishot – deduct $9.94 from yearly plan |
Host multiple domains
Dreamhost.com – host unlimited domains
Bluehost.com – host unlimited domains
Anhosting.com – 20 domains
Hostgator.com – only one domain allowed
I need multiple hosting as I have a few domains under my name that I might want developed properly.
Bandwidth and Disk storage
| Dreamhost.com | Anhosting.com |
| Disk Storage – 145.6 GB (weekly increase by 1 GB)Monthly Bandwidth – 1.46 TB (weekly increased by 16 GB) | Disk Storage – 250 GBMonthly Bandwidth – 2.5 TB |
| Bluehost.com | Hostgator.com |
| Disk Storage – 300 GBMonthly Bandwidth – 3 TB | Disk Storage – 50 GBMonthly Bandwidth – 0.2 TB |
I am not too into the bandwidth and disk storage as I believe I will not outgrow these specs in quite some time.
There are of course other considerations like MySQL database, email accounts, auto-responders, Fantastico One click installation and more, but I am not knowledgeable enough to gauge these specs. Mostly, it’s the more the merrier.
Well, after all these number crunching, I choose Bluehost.com as the plan is cheap but mainly of the many glowing reviews in the forums and blogs (eg. web hosting packages by bloggingfingers.com). After using it for a week, I must say I am satisfied with the hosting. The best thing I found out about the tech support is the instant chat that will help you solves or answer any questions you might have about the hosting, cpanel or installation. That’s very reassuring.
